July 2025 - Lancaster, PA - Pennsylvania has passed a new law that gives stronger workers’ compensation protections to firefighters and other first responders diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Injury (PTSI).
Starting October 30, 2025, these workers no longer need to prove “objective abnormal working conditions” to qualify for benefits.
Rankin & Gregory, LLC (RG Injury Law) is proud to help first responders understand their rights and file workers’ compensation claims under this new law.
How the Law Changes PTSI Claims in Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania’s updated workers’ compensation law makes it easier for firefighters, police officers, EMTs, and paramedics to qualify for PTSI benefits.
Before this change, workers had to meet strict proof standards that often blocked mental health claims. Now, PTSI connected to both single traumatic incidents and long-term job stress can qualify for benefits without the old restrictions.
Governor Josh Shapiro supported the law, saying it gives first responders access to care without unnecessary hurdles. The Pennsylvania Professional Firefighters Association called it a step forward for those facing the serious mental health risks of the job.
The change opens the door for more timely support and better protection for first responders.
Why This Matters for Firefighters and First Responders
First responders face extreme situations, and many develop PTSI after years of exposure to serious accidents, fires, and emergencies. Until now, too many were locked out of workers’ comp benefits because of outdated rules.
More firefighters die by suicide than in the line of duty.
This new law is a chance to change that. It shows real recognition of what first responders face every day and gives them a path to get help without jumping through impossible legal hoops. It’s also a step toward reducing the stigma around mental health on the job.
